Capture, Editing and Post-Production

  • There are a large array of FOSS video capture, editing and post-production tools out there. Unfortunately the high level of development required for these tools means few really compete with their proprietary counterparts. HyperEngine-AV for Mac is one program that is certainly up to the task. We haven't included a serious editing program for Windows as we didn't feel the programs we surveyed we sufficiently up to scratch, however minimal editing is possible with programm like Virtual Dub. Editing video on Linux is also not as easy as it should be but some basic editing is possibly using Kino.

    Blender

Blender is an excellent tool for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production and interactive creation. Blender is highly sophisticated and whilst difficult it can be difficult to get started has a very large range of functionality.

  • Kino

Kino is a non-linear DV editor for GNU/Linux. It integrates with DV Grab for IEEE-1394 (firewire interface for your computer) capture from your camera, allows you playback control like fastforward, rewind, play, pause etc and recording back to the camera. It captures video to your computer in Raw DV, AVI format.

You can load multiple video clips, cut and paste portions of video/audio, and save it to an edit decision list. Also, Kino can export the composed movie in a number of formats: DV over IEEE 1394 (back to your recorder), Raw DV, DV AVI, still frames, WAV, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4.

    DV Grab

To capture footage to edit in Kino you need to use DVgrab. DVgrab receives audio and video data from a digital camcorder via an IEEE 1394 (widely known as FireWire) link and converts them into an AVI file. It features automatic splitting of long video sequences into several files to allow storage on various media like VCD etc, and supports saving the data as raw frames and image files.
